BASIC FACTS

Peru is located in west-central South America.  Its northern neighbor is Ecuador. South of Peru lies Chile and Bolivia, to the north-east  is  Columbia and due east, Peru's neighbor is Brazil.  Peru enjoys a long western coastline on the Pacific Ocean.

Peru has a population of over 23 million people,  which makes it the 19th largest country in the world.   Approximately one third of these live in Lima, the capital cityy.  The country's citizens are primarily descendents of Spanish settlers and native Inca and pre-Inca cultures.  The population is diverse, being comprised of 45% Native American, 37% Mestizo, 15% White, and 3% Black, Asian, or of other racial origin.

There are three national languages in Peru today.  These include: Spanish, and the native Quechua and Aymara.  Literacy is estimated at 85%.

Peru is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, with 92.5% of the population affiliated with this faith.  This reflects the enduring influence of Spanish conquest and culture on Peruvian life.
